When high school chemistry teacher Mike Garretson learns one of his ancestral relatives was the victim of identity theft, long before it became the preferred crime of today’s white collar thieves, he suddenly finds himself having to prove it before he ends up as dead as his murdered grandmother.

Mike’s only hope of winning the family inheritance is to hire historian Dr. Jennie Foster. But as she begins to uncover nearly century-old family secrets, Mike fears the feisty and brainy Jennie may discover more than he wants her to know.

Jennie’s happy to climb around in her mysterious and aloof co-worker’s family tree. At least until she discovers Mike has a few secrets too. As the ancestral body count rises and a modern killer discovers what they’re looking for, will Jennie lay her life–and her heart–on the line for a man who refuses to let her into his?

I am really enjoying this book. One of my hobbies is genealogy so to have a mystery involving genealogy is so much enjoyable. I wish the author would write some more books involving these characters. Can't wait to sit down and continue reading this book this evening!

This story is intricate and interesting, with some gracious nods to local history and landmarks in the Metro East. Jennifer is a wonderful character, loveable and flawed but still an excellent heroine. I was captivated until the end and couldn't put it down!
I have been an active genealogist for over 45 years. I work in the local library and had them order this book for our shelves. I figured I would give it a try. Well started it less than 24 hours ago. I could not put it down! Ms Brower did a wonderful job putting together a suspencful mystery, following a genealogical researcher and historian in logical order. She mentioned real souces we use every day such as the National Archives, courthouses, Rootsweb.com. She followed old family stories and modern family mysteries. Identity thefts done almost 100 years ago, greed, rumors... And then the irony in the ending! Let's not think of boring as she adds a good romantic story to the who was afraid it might be boring! Looking forward to reading another book by A J BrowerA Family To Die For Laura Schmidt DigMyPast@msn.com
I thoroughly enjoyed this romantic suspense novel. The characters in this adventure were fantastic, both the hero and heroine and the supporting cast. With a less skillful author the number of players could have been confusing but instead they enhanced the plot, expand the relationship between Mike and Jennie and help unravel the puzzle. The romance is subtle and strong as it seems to take the couple by surprise. Their connection comes across as genuine and strong. I like my heroes and heroines to be real people with relate-able personalities and these two did not disappoint. I'm a sucker for a cute little ball of fur in a story and this doggie helped with character development and the plot. This isn't a super clever mystery which is too taxing to solve, it is a fun one to follow along page by page. I loved all the detailed history in this tale; it was a perfect balance of knowledge without being too extensively boring. This would be a perfect read for lounging around the pool or curling up on a rainy afternoon. - Theresa Joseph
Some family legends are true. In A Family to Die For, AJ Brower draws us into the history of a complicated family. A family that just happens to operate a successful pharmaceutical company.

Mike Garretson, high school chemistry teacher and baseball coach, is running out of time to comply with a great uncle's will and claim his inheritance. So he hires fellow faculty member, Dr. Jennifer Foster, to assist with some family documents. What he gets is much more than the best researcher in the area.

Jennie falls in love with the isolated Victorian mansion, River Bluffs, which is central to Mike's inheritance and the location of much of the family history. She needs to find actual proof of a family legend with roots in World War I.

Mike and Jennie pick their way along a personal relationship as carefully as they sort through the contents of the mansion's attic. Along with the discoveries about Mike's ancestors they find new facets their own characters.

AJ Brower has created likable central characters and surrounded them with corporate intrigue, murders spaced throughout seventy odd years, and family skeletons. All this is on an active background of the final weeks of a school year, baseball tournaments, and Mike's ex-wife's sudden demands for attention.

This was a story that kept me going....just another scene.....just another chapter before I put it down.

I really did like this book quite a lot and echo what others have said about it being a page-turner! I just couldn't get past the fact that considering the setting was the St. Louis area - a baseball town, the baseball references were just wrong. Baseball GAMES (not "matches") do not go into "overtime" - they go into extra innings. And in the bottom of the ninth with the game tied the home team only needs to score one run and the game is over. Unless the batter hits a home run, only that one run will score no matter how much the next runner "deserves the chance to score."

I know, it's nit-picky - but there were multiple references like that and they really distracted me from an otherwise great genealogy-mystery-romance combination!!
