Rasurgam is a story of loss and reclamation. The story begins at the onset of the economic downturn when Jeff Rider, an executive for a Chicago agency, leaves his job and the next day flies to Boston to watch his daughter receive her doctorate from Harvard. Jeff chronicles how his life spirals downward after the ironic juxtaposition of his job loss and his daughter’s moment of glory, until he eventually becomes the lone crew member on a commercial fishing vessel, doing the country’s most dangerous work. Jeff’s passage from the executive suite to the poop deck, where Jeff is believed to be- “the oldest active longline deckhand in Alaska,”- provides for a high seas ride of humorous anecdotes, as well as serious exchanges, as he and his former high school buddy, Aaron the skipper, reminisce about the past, share thoughts about their current circumstances, and muse about the ship of state’s affairs. Fourteen miles out to sea on the Continental Shelf directly west of Sitka, on the precarious waters of the Pacific Ocean, you follow along as Jeff struggles to find equilibrium and to make sense of what’s happening at this juncture of his life.

Rasurgam I shall rise again eBook Jeff Rider

I read Rasurgam: I shall rise again because the title showed up on my Facebook newsline from a Growing Up in Yakima (WA) link. Its author, Jeff Rider, lived down the street from me, and I carpooled to junior high school with his older sister. I wanted to see what he had to say about his life, now that he has lived most of it. My memory of Jeff was pretty much what he has to say about himself in Rasurgam. Like most 17 year-old boys Jeff was immortal, and smarter than his parents. Now, having reached the age of Social Security, he looks back on his life with honesty, pride and some rue. In the book Rider moves back and forth from his experiences in high school, to his life as a Chicago area business executive, to his early marriage years, to his time on an Alaskan long line fishing vessel. I enjoyed his honest assessment of his working life and how corporate America failed him as it has failed many in the past ten years or so. I admired his grit in trying--at a relatively advanced age--to serve as deckhand on a commercial fishing vessel. This is where he focuses much of his attention: on his life on board and in port in Alaska. Commercial fishing in Alaska is hard and dangerous work. Rider set goals for himself in going out fishing, and he met them, and it seems he did not disappoint his friend, the boat's owner/skipper, who took a gamble in inviting an old friend to work with him. Jeff tells his story honestly and he never, ever whines. His detailed descriptions of his fishing experience bring honor and value to manual labor. I liked reading his perspective on where we have come to be in America since our youth. I recommend this memoir to fellow travelers who have made it to these strange days from the idyllic 60s. At that time, some of us believed we could achieve a utopian future. Now we look in puzzlement at where we are and wonder how it all came to this.

This book is couageously honest and heart felt. Jeff is able to tap into some universal truths that
we have all felt even though each of our individual circumstanes are different. It is a valued look into
a great loyal friendship between two friends who have been there for each other over decades. Not to mention the insights into commercial fishing in the Northwest is fascinating! Great book Jeff! Great read!
This book is a must read. I wasn't quite sure when I started the book because I was never into fishing. I not only learned about fishing; I learned about friendship and love. Jeff you really put your heart and sole in this book. I really appreciated how uplifting it was in the end.
Rasurgam I shall rise againThe author has written a totally honest reflection of his life and the events that have shaped it. The reader feels through the prose that they are actually going through the events that the author lived. In our society too often success is defined by how much money we make and how many material things we accumulate. The author, as so many people did after the financial crisis of 2008, finds that he has to start over and give up many things that had been an accepted part of his life. He vows to his wife and family that he will never give up and along the way reunites with his best friend from high school who has a commercial fishing business. He joins his friend as the "oldest deck hand" on his boat for a few weeks during the season which is what they both had done some 40 plus years before. (there is a wonderful before and present picture of both friends) During the trip the importance of friends and family really is seen. This honest heartfelt story is one I recommend to everyone.
This is a memoir worth reading. The pain of loss is paired with the insight of refocusing on what is really important in life. What a gift to have the opportunity to come through a life changing circumstance and have the courage to share the bumps and warts along the way! Bravo!"
This book is hard to out down once you get "hooked".

Peppered with witty interludes and the emotions of life that tug and pull at each of us at one time or another, I found myself Cheering this real life hero through the storms, knowing the sunshine that is there in his mind, is just behind any dark cloud which life blows his way; will be activated with his sheer determination to never give up.

Jeff, the oldest active longline deckhand in Alaska...thanks for writing this inspirational book!
This is a memoir of a business exec who finds himself unemployed as a result of the economic downturn., a common situation for many ppl the past few years. The topic is common, the book is not!
Truly the most interesting book I've read in many years.

The author, Jeff Rider, begins the book with a letter to his young granddaughter . After reading the letter, I had to download the book and read entire compelling story in less than 24 hours.

I enjoyed the authors candor, his sense of humor, and his description of a great adventure during his time of unemployment. Entire book was introspective and ultimately uplifting.

I really enjoyed the AFTERWORD. Great book .
In style and spirit of personal tales in commercial fishing and the sea from Linda Greenlee, the irreverence and humor of a Bill Bryson, storytelling and detailed observations from Sabastian Junger and Alaska chronicles of John McPhee - and as a standout tale of personal redemption and re-discovery as he finds his center again, the author's book delivers. After leaving a job and an industry, at risk of being permanently identified with it and its failings, with aging and personal vitality on mind while looking back on professional accomplishment and decisions made - good and bad - the author finds himself back in familiar territory at a much different point in his life as a deckhand on an Alaska commercial longline fishing boat. Written well with a light touch, brutally and bravely honest, Rider succeeds in capturing what many of us have been through, or may still experience in our lives, and does so in a vivid and entertaining framework of places and activities we might only dream about. He does it with wit and humor, guts and passion. You can almost feel a weight being lifted from his shoulders as he tells his story. A fun and interesting read
